On January 1, 2020, I spread out magazine and greeting card clippings, pieces of jewelry, artwork, and handwritten thoughts onto a poster board, laying it out according to my themes. I formed my vision board, and this was a part of a group exercise. This group was bursting with hope and dreams of prosperity. We shared videos, original artwork, affirmations, past pains, tears of empathy and joy, as well as new realities. These realities had a few constraints for each individual, but overall there was so much room to grow in so many ways to achieve the desires outlined on our boards. We spoke with excitement about exactly how we would achieve and the overflow of exuberance was apparent. In March, all of our geographical areas were in lockdown due to the pandemic, and things were in disarray. None of the paths to desired outcomes were feasible, and it was unclear when this would change. As situations developed, it was at least clear the pandemic would impact plans for the long haul. The group dispersed, with everyone wondering, “What Now?”
Perhaps you’ve had a similar experience. There is always room to adapt with a vision board, and that is why leaving space is encouraged. However, adapting in these unprecedented times may leave you staring blankly and hopelessly at it with dismay. These emotions are totally understandable. It is time to be creative! I altered by plans and found my true calling. I needed to remain fully remote over the long term, and the dire need for mindfulness, more than ever, gave me the spark to launch Astonishing Minds LLC. There are different circumstances for everyone, and in many cases, finances, family needs, and goals are altered dramatically.
Vision boards are based on overriding intention so it is time to remove the specificity and reinvent it. Look at the themes rather than the specifics. When I did this, I realized I have been able to meet my physical, spiritual, and emotional needs in unconventional ways and that the business that emerged fulfilled my deepest desires in a more powerful way than my original inputs could ever address. You’ve overcome a lot and this is a reason to be proud. You could even place images depicting how you adapted to unprecedented realities on the board. You could add word clips describing unexpected or pronounced characteristics you saw in yourself. The intentions behind the themes never change. You as a person haven’t warped into something other than what you are at your core. It is only the specificity that needs to be altered. For example, if you intended upon better health, your original image of the gym and eating at better restaurants with friends may have been destroyed. However, the same goals may have been achieved through group video exercise sessions, grocery delivery of nutritional choices, and having more time to engage mindfully with methods you may not have discovered prior to spending more time at home. The intention has been addressed, amidst a world complaining of less, where you can see you’ve actually had everything you’ve desired, and perhaps more, by other means.
